Normand Lemay interview form shooliem - my note
Normand is a storyboard artist at Disney. without the Disney job he and his wife Griz also doing their own blog in the free time which is full of figure drawing and some drawing tips.
In this interview, he mentions some important point. and those are my note for the interview.
1. He says he's leaning process is take the teacher given and breakdown to the simple form to learn. It takes time. Because you can't get it is the first time. keep finding the way is easy for you to learn.
2. Make it simple. He says since working in the industry for a long time. He thinks the easy and best way is to simply the things. Not only the work but the life. most of the time the simple way is the best way to represent the main thing we want to talk.
3. Always go to your wheel goal (real goal, main goal), don't satisfy with the goal front of you and just that. For example, my main goal is working in the feature animation industry. But you know the job will not that easy to come to you. sometimes, in the beginning, you need to do some other works isn't about feature animation. the goal front of you is to finish the job you have been given, but don't forget the main goal in your mind. Do it and achieve it.
4. Build the portfolio for the feature film. Make the storyboard they are looking for. Doing what they think about. there are some points Normand mention.
-more lose
-more don't have the restriction (限制)
-luxury, expensive (those usually will not happen in TV production)
-full of life
5. A good storyboard not mean is suit for the film. Sometime you will make an awesome board and super hilarious, but it's didn't achieve the main idea the movie want to express, so maybe you should change it and keep it to the next time.
6. the hardest(spent more time) board is the emotion or the situation you never experience before.
7. the first version of the storyboard is usually not the final one. because sometimes it doesn't cover everything the story want to describe. sometimes is because the board artist and director have a different perspective. Sometimes is the board doesn't fully describe the atmosphere where concept art show. So fix it and keep working on it, discuss with people and final you will close what you want.
8. Keep learning. Do your best work every time.
